Von Blei zu Gold

Publication

In Jan Hottmann’s exhibition Von Blei zu Gold at MKG Hamburg, his artworks depict a peculiar journey through two digital worlds, built and photographed in a game engine. This publication is the exhibition’s grand closure and adds a whole other layer of identity and dramaturgy through graphic design.

  4. Design [sellout!]

Jan’s work uses the analogy of the alchemical transformation of lead into gold to depict the transformation from destructive male norms to healthy, emotionally open behaviors. The iridescent color that can be perceived as either warm silver or cold gold graphically represents the transitional state of this transformation. Titles and Headlines melt into or are even torn apart by the reflective background, hinting at the alchemical process of the changing state, its violence and its potential, while mirroring the works story in abstract motion.

Thank you, Thinkprint for your openness to unusual ideas, the exceptional consulting, and of course, the mint result. Vārm

Visual Identity + Web Design

Vārm’s visual identity and online store are very closely aligned to their values. Represented by a semi-transparent layer, non obstructively but distinctively merging with their fashion, their people and their intent.

  4. Design [sellout!]

Vārm's design language mirrors its mission of transparency and sustainability. The transparent overlay seamlessly integrates with the brand's fashion and ethos, symbolizing the clarity Pauline advocates. Elements and typography blend effortlessly with the subject matter and showcase the eco-friendly production, natural materials, and packaging as well as hinting at the fluidity of gender-neutral styles and timeless designs.

Vomhörensehen

Visual Identity + Web Design

The goal for their visual identity and website first an foremost, was not only to match Vomhörensehen’s exceptional work and message formally, but to create a versatile toolbox that aligns perfectly to their process.

Vomhörensehen's visual identity captures their collaborative process of scribbling ideas with people (as a media agency for social matter). It reflects their role as Sozialversteher:innen (Social Understanders) through an ideal information architecture. Clear pathways mirror their role as Ideenverstärker:innen (Idea Amplifiers), guiding thoughts. As Medienmacher:innen (Media Makers), they integrate various media formats to create impactful and accessible content.

About

I am a rather conceptual designer. That means I like to understand things in depth and work from the inside out, from the content to the concept to the form. It sounds obvious, but it is less self-evident than one might think. I appreciate working within certain constraints. These can be practical needs, such as a specific product requirement or budget limits within which one can work more purposefully and efficiently. But I also greatly benefit from concept-based, consciously set boundaries in the creative process.

In addition to visual identities and publications, I am increasingly focusing on web design and programming, taking a holistic approach. Context is of crucial importance to me! It means a lot to me when the people I work with take their context as seriously as I do. "Context" can mean many things—from the niche in which a product is consciously or unconsciously placed, to the tone of writing and speaking, down to the smallest details like the choice of whitespace. Every detail communicates something, often subconsciously in specific situations. I like to take care of these details and ensure that the entire process remains pragmatic.

My goal is to contribute to an open and sustainable society through my work.
I studied communication design at HSD (Hochschule Düsseldorf) and HAW (Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften), where I also teach web design.
